ready spaces. With its rooftop
terrace overlooking Swansea
Bay and its bold architectural
design, solar panels and heat
recovery systems, it impressed
the judges with its seamless
integration of architectural
quality, sustainability, and
user-focused innovation.
The building features allelectric HVAC systems with
air-source heat pumps, MVHR
(Mechanical Ventilation with
Heat Recovery system) with
mixed-mode capability and
rooftop photovoltaic panels,
which achieve EPC A18 and
net zero-carbon operation.
The multidisciplinary team,
led by WSP, overcame
challenges including the
bco.org.uk
need to integrate an open
two-storey basement and the
site’s location between two
thoroughfares. This led to the
creation of a new pedestrian
route between Kingsway and
Oxford Street and a courtyard
to enhance connectivity and
public realm. These elements
won praise from the judges
for enabling the future
regeneration of the area and
of Swansea high street.
They were also struck by
how well the scheme embeds
resilience to future climate
challenge in the form of
openable windows, external
terraces, touchless controls
and Sustainable Drainage
Systems using a blue roof
and soft landscaping. This
thoughtful approach meant
that BREEAM Excellent,
Wired Platinum and Urban
Green Factor 0.3 targets
were achieved without
compromising on flexibility,
comfort, and wellbeing for the
people who use this workplace.
The judges concluded:
“This scheme pushes
boundaries—delivering
creative solutions in
design, construction, and
environmental performance
that elevate both occupier
experience and long-term
asset value.”
