embodies a truly holistic
approach to ESG and shows
what can be achieved when
the desire and commitment
exist to do things differently.
The move to a smaller base
in the city prioritised hybrid
working flexibility. It involved
staff consultation from the
outset, resulting in some
outstanding design solutions
with employee wellbeing at
the forefront.
Sustainable design is core
to Cundall’s ethos, making it
vital for the business to lead
by example – a priority it
shares with SPACE Architects.

and furniture all recycled
from their previous fit out.
Cundall’s sustainability
specialists conducted wholelife carbon assessments
at both the early design
stage and post-completion.
This ensured that circular
potential was maximised,
while significantly reducing
whole-life carbon impact.
Around 60% of materials and
furniture came from reclaimed
sources – including from client
Rabobank, for which Cundall
drew up a Circular Economy
Strategy Statement.
This commitment
resulted in exceptionally low
embodied carbon at design
stage. The office achieved
a 41% reduction in upfront
embodied carbon compared to
a design without sustainability
features, along with an 87%
reduction against the UK
Net Zero Carbon Building
Standard target for 2025
office fit outs.
The judges concluded:
“This project has pushed
the boundaries on circular
economy principles and is
a practical demonstration
of highly sustainable, costefficient, human-centred
design, proving that highperformance, flexible, and
healthy workplaces can be
delivered through circularity
principles, careful planning,
and performance-based
decision-making.”
