esigned in 1859 by
Glasgow’s celebrated
architect Alexander
“Greek” Thomson, the A-listed
Grosvenor Building has been
part of the city’s architectural
landscape for more than 160
years. Today, its second floor
has a new role as the home of
BDP’s Glasgow studio.
BDP set out to create a
bright, open and sustainable
studio that reflects its creative
identity, while respecting
the character of its historic
setting. The 8,584 sq ft
space brings together openplan workstations, informal
breakout zones and flexible
settings designed to support

both collaboration and
focused work. This is an
environment of exceptional
quality and usability.
The design carefully works
with – not against – the
constraints of the existing
building through subtle
interventions. This can be
seen in the orientation of
desking to maximise natural
light while avoiding perceived
hierarchies in workspace
allocation.
The studio has helped
shape a new way of
working for BDP. Staff have
embraced the space, which is
strengthening collaboration
and connectivity.
The judges praised
the project for setting “a
benchmark for contemporary
workplace design, offering an
environment of exceptional
quality and usability”.
Sustainability clearly
plays a core role here with
energy-efficient lighting,
low-VOC finishes and smart
heating controls all reducing
operational carbon and
promoting healthy air quality.
The scheme achieves low
energy use while prioritising
the reuse of existing furniture,
