L
ucent is a light-filled,
modern workplace that
is proudly rooted in its
architectural history.
Located minutes from
Glasgow’s Central and Queen
Street stations, the £35m
redevelopment designed by
Mosaic Architecture + Design
delivered a newbuild wrapped
in a restored sandstone
façade.
Originally constructed
between 1892 and 1900 for
The Central Thread Agency,
the building was designed
by Scottish architects H&D
Barclay. It had sat vacant
since 2017 before Mosaic
was brought in to reposition
it as a modern headquarters
workplace.
Lucent now offers 90,000
sq ft of space across six
floors. An additional level
and new roof were added
during construction, with
a central atrium bringing
natural light into the building
and improving the office
floorplates. It boasts multiple
outdoor terraces, as well as a
four-storey living wall and two
penthouse suites.
The judges said Lucent
was “an exemplary project
demonstrating how a complex
and constrained building can
be successfully transformed
into high quality office
accommodation”.
It offers an impressive

range of amenities, from a
tenant lounge and fitness
studio to an artisan café,
supported by cycle spaces and
showers. Lucent has achieved
operational carbon net zero,
an EPC A rating and Wired
Score Platinum. Its zerocarbon design and delivery
roadmap offers 33 years of
savings in operational carbon
emissions.
The judges concluded that
“the clever incorporation
of the historic sandstone
frontage on the upper levels
preserves and celebrates the
building’s heritage, while
enabling the delivery of highquality Grade-A workspace.”
