he full refurbishment of
Lloyds Banking Group’s
Grade II-listed Halifax
Trinity Road building has
created a dynamic, 317,000
sq ft future-ready campus.
Originally opened by Her
Majesty the Queen in 1974,
Trinity Road called for a
heritage-led transformation.
The result proves that a
Grade II-listed, 1970s
concrete frame structure can
be reimagined as a highperformance workplace.
The judges were particularly
impressed by the sensitive
restoration of the iconic façade
and conservation of original
timber panelling alongside
major technical upgrades.
Historic character has been
preserved at the same time as
delivering a workplace that
offers extremely high levels
of comfort, energy efficiency

and performance. Even the
original executive boardroom
chandelier has been retained,
having been re-lamped with
LED fittings.
The judges applauded the
team’s commitment to a
retrofit-first approach that
achieved an EPC A rating.
By replacing the end-of-life
curtain walling with 100%
recycled metal and glass
sourced from the original
supplier they improved
thermal stability while
honouring the building’s
architectural legacy.
Trinity Road now features
three biodiverse green roofs,
a living wall in reception and
rainwater harvesting systems.
The replacement of gas boilers
with ground source heat
pumps, powered by 100%
renewable electricity, removes
1,300 tonnes of CO₂ annually.
To solve the challenge of
deep floorplates, the design
introduced a dramatic central
staircase and rooflight,
bringing daylight into the
core and improving intuitive
navigation.
The judges said: “This
modernisation supports
3,500 hybrid workers through
inclusive, neurodiversity
friendly zones, varied
collaboration settings, and
premium wellbeing facilities.
With 66% furniture reuse
and a £20m social return
on investment, Trinity Road
serves as a gold standard for
sustainable, civic-minded
corporate workplaces.”
