T
he team behind
Stonecutter set out to
deliver a low-carbon
building people want to
work in.
Developed by CO-RE for La
Caisse and PIMCO, it replaced
two 1990s buildings and was
the first major development
in the City to meet the
London Plan’s “Aspirational”
embodied carbon target.
This 240,000 sq ft,
13-storey workplace is an
impressive and thoughtful
building that has leant into its
roots, both in location and to
inform its design – visible in
the geometric façade which
nods to the diamond cutting
heritage of nearby Hatton
Garden.
The judges recognised the
passion of the design team,
led by tp bennett, which had
clearly worked collaboratively
throughout and tackled some
difficult decisions. These
included going all electric at
the start of Stage 4, requiring
a significant redesign which
has paid off.
Strong environmental
performance is delivered
alongside a clear social value
agenda, particularly a focus
on education and community
engagement. An integrated
reception and communal
space are cleverly designed
to be both a feature and to
address the complexity in
bco.org.uk
levels across the site, while
the feature wall showcases
art produced by the local
community.
Stonecutter was fully
let ahead of completion
to tenants including law
firm Travers Smith and
booking platform Trainline,
confirming the team’s
absolute success in achieving
its mission.

island site, incorporating the
history of the location, and
providing a highly sustainable
office building that is designed
with the tenant in mind, the
judges recognised Stonecutter
as a project that will stand the
test of time.
